Innovative Idea: Reducing health care costs by improving accessibility
Jeff Danielson is President Pro Tempore of the Iowa State Senate. Prior to becoming a state senator, Jeff served as the Commissioner of the Iowa Department of Transportation. Jeff also served in the Navy from 1988 to 1994, after which he returned to Iowa and became a firefighter. While working and raising a family, Jeff used the G.I. Bill to go to college.
Jeff recently worked to pass an innovative bill that gives Iowa state employees access to training from their local pharmacists on taking their medication as prescribed, addressing a problem that is estimated to cost the US nearly $300 billion a year. The new law is expected to be particularly helpful for patients with chronic care, as one recent study showed that it saves almost $600 a year for patients with diabetes.
Jeff is also a noted supporter of open government. Among his efforts, he has championed a searchable database of contributions to campaigns and inaugurations and has sponsored legislation to ensure that there is a paper trail in the election process.
