Secretaries of State Get Voters Registered

Idea Category: Defending Democracy

Two NewDEAL Leaders are hard at work ensuring that American voters are registered and ready to exercise their rights in the 2019 and 2020 elections. Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced the official launch of automatic voter registration this week, as well as the rollout of online voter registration following the November 2019 election. In California, Secretary of State Alex Padilla's program to pre-register eligible 16- and 17-year-old residents has been in operation for three years, pre-registering more than 400,000 teens. In an interview with Teen Vogue, Secretary Padilla said that turnout for this group has been high so far - of the 100,000 pre-registered voters who were 18 in time for the midterms, 55,000 cast a ballot.
