Mayor Lovely Warren has been tapped to join NewDEAL, or “developing exceptional American leaders,” an organization of 150 of the most progressive state and local Democratic leaders in the nation.

One of nine handpicked to join the organization, Warren was chosen for her commitment to progress, namely her push to move Rochester’s economy and development forward, rather than linger on past successes. Warren, as part of NewDEAL, will be prompted to follow the organization’s “The Way Forward” political agenda. A progressive manifesto, the platform emphasizes growth, economic diversity, inclusion and development.

“We are excited to welcome Mayor Warren as part of another class of innovative pro-growth progressives from throughout the country who are committed to meeting the demands of a changing world and rebuilding trust in government,” said former Delaware governor Jack Markell, in a statement. “We look forward to promoting her work as part of NewDEAL’s policy agendas, while giving her the chance to learn from other leaders and work with them to set a vision for the future.”

NewDEAL is composed exclusively of Democrats, and quite successful ones at that. In the 2016 and 2017 elections, approximately 98 percent of NewDEAL members were elected or reelected, regardless of their state being red or blue.

“When I took office in 2014, I immediately recognized that business as usual wasn’t working anymore; we had to look past the status quo,” Warren said. “Over the past four years our initiatives have been innovative, ambitious, and progressive. I’m proud that we are making progress on our goals of creating more jobs, safer neighborhoods, and better educational opportunities, and I will not rest until the job is done.”

Among Warren’s upcoming economic development plans is the rebuilding of Rochester’s Genesee Riverfront community, dubbed “Roc the Riverway.” In February, Governor Andrew Cuomo dedicated $50 million in state funding toward the project.
