Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein’s Police Training Community Immersion Program Sees Success
Idea Category: Jobs Training, Public Safety
The police training community immersion program established by Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein is yielding positive results: officer complaints to the inspector general’s office decreased 11% in 2024. Over a dozen recruit cohorts have undergone the weeks-long program, which includes hands-on volunteer work at local nonprofits and exercises in identifying and implementing practical solutions to community issues. “What we identified was a lot of the recruits coming to Columbus now, they aren’t from Columbus, so they’re not aware of the city,” Columbus Division of Police Sgt. Keith Barker said. “This allows them the opportunity in a low-stress environment to engage in a community, to learn about what the community’s concerns are, to hear it, and real-world perspective.”
