Georgia Senator Elena Parent Unveils Bill Requiring People to Recieve Hearings Before Deportation can Occur

Idea Category: Immigration

Georgia Senator Elena Parent and Democratic leaders unveiled a new bill that would require that a person receive a hearing before any formal deportation is carried out by local law‑enforcement agencies. Parent framed the effort as a necessary safeguard after high‑profile mistakes like the deportation of Maryland man, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, warning that such errors erode public trust and endanger civil rights. “The Democratic Senate next year will draft legislation that will say no county or municipal law enforcement may help facilitate the wrongful deportation of a person located in Georgia who is an American citizen,” said State Sen. Harold Jones III, the Democratic minority leader. “What we’re talking about is wrongful deportations, wrongful. That’s going to be the key thing.”
