Maine Speaker of the House Ryan Fecteau Sponsored a Bill That Would Increase the Real Estate Transfer Tax on Expensive Homes to Fund the Construction of New Units

Idea Category: Housing

Maine Speaker of the House Ryan Fecteau sponsored a bill that would increase the real estate transfer tax on home sales over a million dollars, providing a sustain fund to help Maine reach its goal of building 84,000 new units by 2030. It would also eliminate the tax for both sellers and buyers on purchases involving first-time home buyers qualified through Maine Housing. "I think the real estate transfer tax impacts those who are scraping together the funds to make a closing happen versus those who are buying million dollar plus homes...these are the folks that need the relief. Relief would also go to the sellers, so I think it'll make the loan a little more competitive for the buyers because sellers would also save money," Fecteau said.
