Ben Sorenson

City Commissioner | Fort Lauderdale, FL

Ben Sorensen was sworn in as the Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner for District 4 on December 3, 2024. Ben previously served as the Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner for District 4, first elected in 2018 and re-elected unopposed in 2020. He has twice served as Vice Mayor of Fort Lauderdale. Ben has long worked with neighbors in Fort Lauderdale to address issues facing the city and implement solutions. His top policy initiatives are to combat homelessness and improve waterways in Fort Lauderdale. He actively partners with various community stakeholders to accomplish these goals.

A proud product of Florida public schools, throughout Ben’s childhood his family instilled in him a lasting commitment to public service and community advocacy.  Ben’s father, Dr. Andrew Sorensen co-founded the HIV/AIDS Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Ben’s mother, Donna Sorensen oversaw the nutritional needs of these patients.

Ben’s passion for fostering engagement and bringing people together led him to various career fields. He is a third-generation Presbyterian minister and has served as a volunteer chaplain for both the Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood Police Departments. Ben currently serves as a volunteer chaplain at Broward Health Medical Center. He is also the third generation in his family to serve in the United States Armed Forces. Ben is a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Navy Reserve serving as a Chaplain. Before this position, he served as an intelligence officer in the Navy Reserve for 17 years before redesignating in 2025. His personal awards include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Ben is also the CEO and founder of Sorensen Consulting, Inc. His firm provides executive coaching and leadership training to corporate and nonprofit organizations. Prior to founding Sorensen Consulting, Ben co-founded Optimum Associates, LLC, where he provided leadership, sales, and management training to large corporations, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations. Ben holds six academic degrees: a Master of Science in Strategic Intelligence from the National Intelligence University, a Doctor of Ministry from Amridge University, a Master of Divinity from Amridge University, a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center, a Master of Arts in Leadership and Liberal Studies from Duquesne University, and a Bachelor of Arts from Emory University. While at Georgetown Law, he studied international trade law under current United States Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.

Ben is married to Anna Sorensen, who serves as the South Florida Senior Advancement Director for University Advancement at NSU Florida. Together, they are the proud parents of two daughters and one rescue dog, Ginger.
