Boise Mayor Lauren McLean and Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall both put forward creative solutions to state laws banning the display of any flags not on an approved list, such as the LGBTQ+ pride flag. Mayor McLean adopted the pride flag and a flag honoring lifesaving organ donors as two of Boise’s official city flags, while Mayor Mendenhall created a new city flag design: the rainbow pride flag with a sego lily, the city’s emblem. Both city councils approved the flags, rendering them official government symbols. “My sincere intent is not to provoke or cause division,” Mendenhall said. “My intent is to represent our city’s values and honor our dear diverse residents who make up this beautiful city and the legacy of pain and progress that they have endured.”
