Home/Condo Hardening Program

Idea Category: 2025 Ideas Challenge, Improving Quality of Life

2025 Ideas Challenge Entry

Many states face a property insurance crisis, with homeowners—particularly seniors—being priced out of their homes. Recent building safety reforms for condominiums, enacted after structural failures, have further increased costs for condo owners. Coastal states are especially vulnerable to hurricanes, contributing to rapidly rising insurance premiums.

To address this, the My Safe Florida Home program was recently expanded with the My Safe Florida Home Condo Pilot Program, which offers:

  • Free inspections to identify ways to harden homes and condos against hurricanes.
  • Matching grants to help homeowners and condo associations invest in necessary safety improvements.

These programs educate property owners about their risks and encourage private investment in strengthening structures. The goals are twofold: reduce insurance premiums and increase the resilience of homes and condos in the face of severe weather.

Impact or how it will be measured:

The impact will be seen in lower insurance premiums for those homes and how they hold up when in the path of a hurricane.
