State Representative Andy X. Vargas represents the 3rd Essex District (Haverhill) in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He serves as the Vice-Chair of the Economic Development and Emerging Technologies Committee. He also serves as a member of the following committees: Ways & Means, Education, Public Health, and Redistricting. He is a member of the Massachusetts Black & Latino Legislative Caucus. Vargas was previously elected to the Haverhill City Council, where he served as the city’s first Latino elected official
Rep. Vargas was the chief House sponsor of recently passed housing production legislation which included the most significant zoning reforms in a generation in Massachusetts. As the Vice-Chair of the Economic Development Committee, he helped develop and support the passage of sports betting legalization through the House. Additionally, Vargas has led successful legislation to mandate civics education, expand school meals participation and access, and prevent community-based gun violence.
