NewDEALers Respond to Federal Shutdown
- Virginia State Senator Aaron Rouse posted on X: "The U.S. government has shut down, even as Republicans control all three branches of the federal government. This shutdown is already having serious consequences for Virginians—especially here in Hampton Roads, where so many families depend on federal paychecks."
- Pennsylvania Lt. Governor Austin Davis posted on X: "At midnight, the federal government shut down because Congressional Republicans wanted to continue on their war path of closing federal agencies, defunding essential programs, and kicking millions of Americans off of their healthcare. In Pennsylvania alone, healthcare premiums would increase by 208% for those with financial assistance — that’s 500,000 Pennsylvanians being priced out or losing access to healthcare altogether. Every Pennsylvanian, every American should have healthcare. It is absolutely disgraceful to purposefully attack the poorest Americans and force them to choose between buying insulin or putting food on the table. From buying an inhaler or keeping the heat on in winter. We must fund healthcare and it must be affordable."
- Kansas House Minority Leader Brandon Woodard posted on X: "Republicans control the White House, the Senate, and the House and yet this Administration wants to blame Democrats who refuse to let the GOP strip Americans of their healthcare. Kansans are tired of the DC mess and want solutions-oriented lawmakers in Topeka and DC."
- Evanston, IL Mayor Daniel Biss posted on X: "I stand with Rep. Schakowsky and the entire Illinois Democratic delegation in fighting for what we deserve: affordable healthcare, lower everyday costs, and a government that serves the people- not the billionaires.
- Virginia State Delegate Irene Shin posted on X: “Republicans — who have TOTAL control of the [government] — are failing Americans. They fled DC instead of doing their jobs. Trump’s using federal workers as pawns and playing games with Americans’ healthcare. This will have a devastating impact on hundreds of thousands of Virginians.”
- Illinois Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton released a statement: "Republicans in Washington refused to negotiate and demanded that Democrats rubber-stamp every reckless order from a wannabe dictator in the White House—they own every bit of pain this shutdown will cause. Here in Illinois, more than 153,000 federal workers and their families will feel the immediate impact. These are real people with paychecks on the line—people who keep our airports safe, protect our communities, and deliver essential services every single day. This crisis was deliberate: they tried to ram through devastating cuts to health care for working families. Democrats rejected that false choice, and the fallout rests squarely shoulders of Congressional Republicans and President Trump."
- New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver said on X that "Trump's shutdown will hurt NM families" through cuts to food and nutrition support, threats to rural healthcare, causing military families to work without pay, and furloughing public workers.
- Connecticut Comptroller Sean Scanlon posted a video on X explaining the impact that losing health care subsidies will have on the people of Connecticut. He said, "At the end of the day, I hope the President and Congress figure out a way to extend these subsidies. They really, really matter to hardworking people all across our state. But if they can't figure this out, and the President continues to block this along with the Republican Congress, we have a responsibility here in Connecticut to do the right thing and make sure we protect the people of Connecticut if they won't."
