Statement on House Passage of Republican Budget Bill

Washington, D.C. - NewDEAL CEO Debbie Cox Bultan released the following statement after the U.S. House voted to approve Republicans’ wide-ranging tax and spending bill:

“As NewDEAL Leaders have told us repeatedly, and as voters consistently expressed before and after last year’s election, Americans want their leaders focused on the issues affecting their day-to-day lives, especially around affordability. Yet, the massive bill passed by the House offers enormous tax breaks to the wealthiest few at the cost of pushing millions of people off their health insurance, raising energy costs by repealing tax credits, and slashing food assistance, all while adding trillions of dollars to the national debt.

“Ultimately, the legislation’s cruel cuts to Medicaid and other critical services will only increase the burden on states and localities as they also deal with the fallout of the Trump Administration’s other careless funding cuts and erratic, cost-raising tariffs. We can only hope the Senate will spend more effort listening to what people want, addressing the real challenges facing communities across the country, and solving problems rather than creating them.”
