“Tonight's State of the Union address and Democratic response showcased a clear contrast.
On one hand, we saw the President indulge in revisionist history, boasting that our nation is on the right track economically, when in fact he’s done virtually nothing to address the cost-of-living crisis facing all too many people in America. This was not a serious speech. It was a highly partisan campaign-style rally filled with name calling and a steady stream of myths and misinformation.
Meanwhile, the President and his Administration continue to sow chaos, pursue costly tariffs that are a tax on the American people, extol inhumane policies that are tearing our communities apart, repeat lies about the state of our election systems, and inject his brand of divisive, destructive politics into our nation.
On the other hand, we saw Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger offer practical solutions to our biggest challenges – solutions that focus on making life more affordable and that so clearly resonated with voters who powered her victory last November.
Even amid attacks on their residents and cuts to their budgets from Washington, there are pragmatic, innovative Democratic leaders across the country who continue to deliver meaningful progress for working families. That’s the story voters need to hear.
As we look towards midterm elections this fall, Democrats like Governor Spanberger will make this case across the nation, starting at the state and local levels. I believe that Americans will embrace this approach and turn away from the chaos of the past year.
The path forward is clear. NewDEAL will continue to lift up the state and local leaders who are showing that government can work effectively and responsibly for the people it serves, while demonstrating how to counter the President’s attempts to attack Americans’ fundamental rights and our elections system.
That is the message Democrats should carry into the weeks and months ahead.”
