COLORADO: Senator Dylan Roberts, chair of the Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, helped guide ten water-related bills to Governor Jared Polis’ desk. The legislative package would bring millions of dollars in new funding to help protect streams, bring oversight to construction activities in wetlands and rivers, make commercial rainwater harvesting easier, and support efforts to restore the clarity of Grand Lake. Roberts sponsored and co-sponsored several bills, including HB 1379, a first-in-the-nation, bipartisan commitment to protect local wetlands at risk due to a 2023 Supreme Court decision that ruled against federal regulations that were part of the Clean Water Act, and SB 197, which would implement additional conservation recommendations from the Colorado River Drought Task Force.
Roberts also sponsored SB 5, which helps reduce water use on non-functional or artificial turf; he said it is believed that 50% of municipal water has been used for irrigating this type of turf. The bill has been signed into law.
