Kendall was raised on a family ranch outside of Three Forks, on the banks of the Madison River. After putting himself through college, Kendall has devoted his professional career to the critical work of local non-profits, including Northern Plains Resource Council, Trout Unlimited, and the Montana Land Reliance.

Fed up with the bickering and politics as usual, Kendall threw his hat in the ring and ran for state representative in 2006. Kendall won both a tough primary and general election that year with the support of 58% of the voters in the neighborhood. He was re-elected to the Montana House of Representatives in 2008 and was elected to a four-year term in the Montana Senate in 2010.
