Community Empowerment Against Addiction

NewDEAL Leader West Virginia Senator John Unger’s GRaCE program is continuing to bring high school students into the fight against addiction. GRaCE, or Greater Recovery and Community Empowerment, trains students and other community members to become addiction mentors and recovery coaches, as well as for other roles that can offer hope for those struggling with addiction. Read more about the program, which just launched its latest iteration of Recovery Coach Academy, which will train over 50 students over four weeks.

Michigan’s Unemployment Insurance Reforms

NewDEAL Leaders Michigan Representatives Darrin Camilleri and Donna Lasinski joined a colleague this week to unveil a 10-bill package of reforms to update the state’s Unemployment Insurance Agency. The bills seek to restore maximum benefit rates, which haven’t changed in two decades; extend eligibility periods back to a standard 26 weeks; adjust dependent amounts to reflect modern realities for families; and reimburse those falsely accused of unemployment fraud due to a computer error. Addressing the Roots of Crime in Columbus

NewDEAL Leader Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein unveiled a new pilot program to reduce theft recidivism, aiming to address the underlying needs and instability that drive an individual to repeat theft rather than simply punishing the crime. Repeat offenders who have stolen from large stores will be eligible to be diverted from jail to case workers who will develop a plan tailored to their needs, whether treatment for addiction or access to services for food insecurity. Helping New Jersey’s Veterans

NewDEAL Leaders New Jersey Senators Vin Gopal and Troy Singleton had bills signed into law last week as part of a package aimed at improving support for veterans. Senator Gopal was a co-sponsor on two of the bills, including one to extend property tax deductions to more veterans, while Senator Singleton co-sponsored two other bills in the package, including one to provide legal services for homeless veterans and those in danger of becoming homeless. Innovating to Help Make Ends Meet

NewDEAL Leader Franklin County, OH Commissioner John O’Grady recently outlined the county’s new plan to help residents who are living under the poverty line, most of whom are employed but still struggling to make ends meet. After 9 months of meetings with the community, commissioners developed a plan with 13 goals and more than 120 action steps. Read more details about the plan, which includes the creation of an innovation center to pilot policies that have been successful in other parts of the country and find what works for Franklin County.

Understanding the Housing Crisis in Salem, MA

As part of her emphasis on finding solutions for Salem’s affordable housing crisis, Mayor Kim Driscoll and the city of Salem, MA released “Homes for Salem”, a four-part video series intended to increase public awareness of the housing crisis and talk about the importance of implementing policy solutions. Mayor Driscoll said the video series will help those who weren’t able to attend public forums to better understand the problem, as the city considers both traditional and creative solutions to build housing stock and update existing homes. Financial Stability through Retirement Savings

NewDEAL Leader Oregon Treasurer Tobias Read testified this week before the Senate Finance Committee on the success of OregonSaves, the nation’s first operating state-based retirement savings program. Treasurer Read introduced the legislation to create OregonSaves as a representative in the state House, and now oversees the program’s implementation as Treasurer. Encouraging Banks to Improve Equity of Service

NewDEAL Leader St. Louis Treasurer Tishaura Jones is working to encourage banks to improve the services they offer in low- to middle-income neighborhoods and create more equity in banking opportunities. Treasurer Jones has expanded the questions the city asks of banks that seek to receive city deposits, such as by looking for detailed data on programs for the unbanked and on issues like home loan denials for African-American residents.
