Secretary of State | Arizona
Adrian Fontes was elected as Arizona’s 21st Secretary of State in 2022. A native Arizonan, Secretary Fontes is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, a husband, and a father of
three daughters and two stepsons.
Secretary Fontes served on active duty in the Marine Corps from 1992 to 1996, where he was nominated for a meritorious commission. His military service instilled in him a lasting commitment to discipline, service, and the defense of democratic institutions. After earning his law degree, Secretary Fontes pursued a career in public service and the administration of justice. He served as a prosecutor with the Denver District Attorney’s Office and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, and later led the International Prosecution Unit at the Arizona Attorney General’s Office.
In 2016, following 15 years of legal practice, Secretary Fontes was elected Maricopa County Recorder. In that role, and now as Secretary of State, he has focused on strengthening Arizona’s election systems by expanding voter access, enhancing security, and increasing transparency. His work includes modernizing ballot tracking technology and improving administrative processes to enhance the voter experience, earning recognition from election organizations nationwide.
