Creating Portable Benefits through a competitive grant program to encourage employers and organizations to innovate and experiment with benefits systems that are especially designed to serve workers outside of traditional full-time positions.

 

  • Securing our Communities and our Planet: Councilmember Andria McClellan (Norfolk, VA)
    Resilient Zoning Code for a Coastal Community to create the most resilient zoning code in the nation to reduce future risks to the built environment. The new zoning code includes elevated building requirements, additional landscaping and open space, and a Resilient Quotient — a point-based system for new development to mitigate risk and support sustainable practices.
  • Empowering Disadvantaged Populations: Mayor Christopher Cabaldon (West Sacramento, CA)
    West Sacramento On-Demand: Mobility for All, which established a first-of-its-kind microtransit service that fills the gap between ride-sharing and traditional bus service to serve all members of his community, including youth, seniors, and the disabled, at a low, flat rate.
  • Rebuilding Community: Councilmember Nirva LaFortune (Providence, RI)
    The Transit Corridor Opportunity Program (TCOP), which recognizes the need for systemic solutions to revitalizing neighborhoods by addressing access to reliable transportation, affordable housing production, employment opportunity, and a ready workforce.

Election Reform & Security in New York

NewDEAL Leader New York Assemblymember David Buchwald recently had several of his bills signed into law, including two to address common election issues as part of a comprehensive election reform effort passed by the Legislature that also included early voting and pre-registration. One bill clarifies the process to appoint poll watchers, while the other ensures poll locations are adequately staffed – both modernize elections and improve efficiency for an easier experience for voters. NewDEAL Leaders taking action on the Gun Crisis

NewDEAL urges leaders across the country to follow these example while also recognizing that federal action is desperately needed. We must not to let this moment pass without taking serious action to prevent gun violence.

NewDEALers Inducted into Bloomberg and Rodel Classes

This week, 6 NewDEAL Mayors were announced as part of the 3rd class of the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, through which 41 mayors from around the world will participate in a yearlong education program to develop municipal executive leadership. NewDEAL Mayors in this year’s class are Kate Gallego (Phoenix, AZ), Leirion Gaylor Baird (Lincoln, NE), Eric Johnson (Dallas, TX), Rick Kriseman (St. Petersburg, FL), Lovely Warren (Rochester, NY), and Nan Whaley (Dayton, OH).

 

A number of NewDEALers were also announced as part of the Aspen Institute’s 2019 class of Rodel Fellows, a program that brings together promising young political leaders to discuss underlying principles of democracy and responsibilities of public leadership while boosting a thoughtful and bipartisan dialogue. NewDEALers in this year’s Rodel Fellows class are Mayor Steven Fulop (Jersey City, NJ), Mayor Kate Gallego (Phoenix, AZ), Lt. Gov. Cyrus Habib (Washington), Sec. of State Alex Padilla (California), and Senate Minority Leader Jeff Yarbro (Nashville, TN).

Nassau County Announces Open Checkbook

NewDEAL Leader Nassau County Comptroller Jack Schnirman announced Open Checkbook, a new website to expand transparency and let the public explore how the county spends taxpayer money. The first phase allows users to track spending by department, vendor, and expense categories, and currently includes data dating back to 2016, with older data soon to come. Learn more about Open Checkbook and the plans to expand transparency with more data and more features.
